Rome, 29 September (LaPresse) – “An incredible feeling. I never thought it could happen. Back-to-back world championships are unique, and we are delighted to have achieved this feat. It’s not every day that you win both the men’s and women’s world championships. I think we have made history in our sport together with the girls, and that is something that makes us very proud.” These were the words of Simone Giannelli, captain of the Italian national volleyball team, upon arrival at Fiumicino airport after winning the World Cup in the Philippines. What will I say to Mattarella when we meet him with the team at the Quirinale? I think I’ll improvise. I remember when we went to the Quirinale in 2022 for the World Cup and I said, “Let’s hope we see each other again on such an occasion”. I’m glad that it has become possible.” In the coming days, the Azzurri will meet with the women’s team, also world champions, and the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
