Milan, Oct. 11 (LaPresse) – Tadej Pogacar cements his place in cycling history. The Slovenian rider from Team UAE Emirates has won the Giro di Lombardia for the fifth consecutive time, matching the record number of victories set by the legendary Fausto Coppi (though in Coppi’s case, they were not consecutive). Pogacar was the overwhelming favorite for the season’s final Monument, on a 241 km course from Como to Bergamo. As expected, the 27-year-old attacked on the hardest uphill stretch of the Passo di Ganda, 37 km from the finish, with a devastating push aided by teammates Isaac Del Toro of Mexico and Rafal Majka of Poland. No one could keep up with the Slovenian, who finished solo with a 1’48” advantage over his great rival, Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step, who again had to settle for second despite a determined chase in the finale. In the final kilometers, the Belgian was also unlucky, as a race motorbike stopped on an uphill section in Bergamo and he narrowly avoided it thanks to incredible quick thinking. Third was Australia’s Michael J. Storer of Tudor Pro Cycling Team at 3’13”. Pogacar wraps up a remarkable 2025, having also triumphed in the Tour de France and World Championship for a total of 20 season victories. For the Slovenian star, that also makes 10 career wins in Monument classics, and in 2025 he reached the podium in all five Monument classics—a feat never previously achieved.
