Milan, 25 Nov. (LaPresse) – Italian football is in mourning. Former national team goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon, historic number one for Milan, has passed away at the age of 95. In his long career, in addition to wearing the Azzurri jersey and the Rossoneri shirt (275 appearances), he also played for Genoa, Fiorentina, and Inter.
Winner of five league titles (four with Milan and one with Inter), he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Italian football. Alongside goalkeeper Lev Yashin, he was selected to represent the FIFA All-Star team in the 1960s. He was a second cousin of the grandfather of the Azzurri team leader, Gigi Buffon.
“His ‘Pincer’ hands made Milan a major protagonist of countless victories in the 1950s. Lorenzo the Magnificent, a good man with a great Rossoneri heart, has left us. It is with great emotion that we bid farewell to Lorenzo Buffon and honor his memory,” reads the Milan club’s message of condolence.
