Milan, 9 January (LaPresse) – It took Lorenzo Musetti, world number 7, just 74 minutes to beat Coleman Wong, ATP number 150, 6-4, 6-4 and reach his 25th ATP semi-final, his 11th on hard court, at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open (ATP 250 on hard court). By beating Hong Kong’s number 1, the local favourite, the player from Carrara became the first Italian semi-finalist in the tournament. ‘I’m very happy, I had already played Wong here, and he has grown a lot since then. I knew I had to be very solid, I stayed focused, I didn’t give him much chance to get ahead in the score,’ he said in a post-match interview, as reported by Supertennis. In the semi-finals, Musetti will face Andrey Rublev or Nuno Borges. The Italian will also feature in the doubles final with Lorenzo Sonego, thanks to the withdrawal in the semi-finals of Diallo and Wong, the Italians’ designated rivals, who announced their retirement before taking to the court. ‘Yesterday’s doubles match was a tough one. I really enjoy playing with Sonego, who is one of my best friends on the circuit. We’ve already lost two finals. Tomorrow, I hope to play a solid match in the semi-finals, just like today,’ added Musetti.
