Skiing: World Cup, Franzoni wins Super-G in Wengen

Rome, Jan. 16 (LaPresse) – Giovanni Franzoni wins his first World Cup victory. The 24-year-old from Manerba del Garda brought Italy back to the top of the podium in the Super-G in Wengen, thirteen years after the last time. Starting with bib number one, the Italian built his victory first in the upper section and then, above all, in the final stretch, brushing the last curves of the Lauberhorn. Franzoni finished ahead of Austria’s Stefan Babinsky, who was 35 hundredths of a second behind the Italian. On the podium was Switzerland’s Franjo Von Allmen, 37 hundredths behind Franzoni. Swiss star Marco Odermatt finished fourth, 53 hundredths off the top. Mattia Casse was eighth, while Dominik Paris and Guglielmo Bosca failed to finish.
