Hagi takes over from the late Mircea Lucescu, who passed away two weeks ago. Hagi, 61, is widely regarded as the greatest Romanian footballer of all time. He led the national team to the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup and played for Barcelona and Real Madrid. He also had a spell in Italy with Brescia. His first spell as Romania’s manager dates back to 2001 and lasted three months. It ended after Hagi failed to take the team to the play-offs for the 2002 World Cup. Since then, Hagi has managed teams in Romania and Turkey, but has now returned to lead the national team. Romania failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
