Spain worried about Yamal, who faces a five-week lay-off

Milan, 23 Apr. (LaPresse) – The Spanish football world is anxious over the condition of Lamine Yamal; the young Barcelona star was injured whilst taking a penalty in the match against Celta Vigo and now faces a lay-off of at least five weeks, which could jeopardise his participation in the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The 18-year-old Yamal, who scored Barça’s only goal, has suffered a hamstring injury. The extent of the injury, which is worrying both the Catalan club and the Spanish national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup, will be known in the coming hours, but according to initial reports in the Spanish media, he is expected to be out for at least five weeks. Dr Pedro Luis Ripoll, one of Spain’s leading sports medicine specialists, contacted by the broadcaster Cadena Ser, warned of the risks of a hasty return: “This type of injury has a 30% recurrence rate, so we must be very careful.” And for this very reason, considering that there are 50 days to go before the World Cup kicks off, “it seems unlikely he will be called up.”
