Milan, 24 May (LaPresse) – In a surprise move, a breakaway caught the peloton off guard on Stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia. Frederick Dversnes Lavik won in a tight sprint finish on the 157 km flat stage from Voghera to Milan. In the final sprint on Corso Venezia, the Uno-X Mobility rider beat the two Italians Mirco Maestri (Team Polti VisitMalta) and Martin Marcellusi (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), who had been in the breakaway since the morning alongside Mattia Bais, who finished fourth (Team Polti VisitMalta). Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) led the group of sprinters, which finished 57 seconds behind. It was a quiet day for the big names, with Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard retaining the pink jersey, 2’26” ahead of Portugal’s Afonso Eulalio of Bahrain Victorious and 2’50” ahead of Austria’s Felix Gall of Decathlon. Tomorrow is the second rest day; the Giro resumes on Tuesday 26th with the 16th stage from Bellinzona to Cari, a mountain stage entirely within Swiss territory.
