Inglewood (California, USA), 26 June (LaPresse/AP) – “I’m absolutely delighted with how my players performed tonight.” So said Turkey’s manager Vincenzo Montella after his side’s 3–2 victory over the United States on the final day of the World Cup group stage, a win that ultimately had no bearing on their qualification for the round of 16. “They showed all their capabilities, all their skills and their character. Playing as they did tonight, away from home, against such a noisy crowd, they wouldn’t have managed it if they hadn’t been so strong,” concluded the Italian manager. “I’m really happy for the Turkish people. I can say that we’re going home with our heads held high.”
