Milan, 1 July (LaPresse) – Serena Williams’ agent has stated that the 23-time Grand Slam champion injured her right knee at Wimbledon during her first singles match in almost four years, but she still hopes to play doubles with her sister Venus in the coming days. Williams, 44, did not require medical attention during her 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 defeat to 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint in the first round on Tuesday. Williams did not speak to the media after the match. Her agent, Jill Smoller, said: “Serena injured her right knee at the end of the first set and was subsequently excused from media commitments by the medical teams at Wimbledon and the WTA.” Smoller added: “She left the court that evening unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later in the week.”
