The Italian, the defending champion, defeated Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki – ranked 151st in the world and the tournament’s big surprise – in three sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. In the next round, the world number one will face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, who progressed after his opponent, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, withdrew in the fifth set.
