Rome, July 21 (LaPresse) — It’s time to hang up the whistle and cards for Anthony Taylor, a 47-year-old veteran English referee known in Italy for officiating the 2023 Europa League final between Roma and Sevilla with a series of questionable calls that were strongly contested by Giallorossi fans and by José Mourinho, who was Roma’s head coach at the time. So much so that, after the match, the Portuguese coach showed up in the underground parking garage of Budapest’s Puskas Arena, calling Taylor a “f**king disaster” and also criticizing UEFA’s referee coordinator, Roberto Rosetti. Taylor, after officiating 831 matches, has decided to retire, explaining his decision as follows: “Refereeing at the highest level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the attention constant. The time has come for me to step aside and look ahead to the next chapter of my career.”
