I believed it was right for Roberto Mancini to become head coach of the Italy national team, for a number of reasons. I take full responsibility for this decision.” This was stated by Italian Football Federation (FIGC) President Giovanni Malagò during a press conference. “The news is that the original concept behind the new management structure—namely the appointment of a Club Italia president and a technical director—remains unchanged. To complete the process, I needed someone with whom I could share the decision regarding the head coach. That person will become the president of Club Italia. His name is Claudio Ranieri. Just a few minutes ago, he confirmed to me his commitment. He is on his way from Calabria and will take on this role,” Malagò added. “It is true what has emerged so far: there was a clearly identified candidate agreed upon following the recommendation of Maldini and Leonardo. However, the subsequent change regarding Andrea Pirlo’s candidacy led me to withdraw my approval, simply based on my assessment of what was most appropriate,” Malagò explained. “There are no other interpretations or hidden truths. I was completely unaware of the collaboration with Fonbet,” the former president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) clarified. “There was no conflict or disagreement with Maldini and Leonardo. The document that Paolo Maldini, Leonardo and I signed explicitly refers to the principle of jointly sharing the final decision. It was a mutual and amicable separation.”
