If he’d been here, perhaps nothing would have happened; we would have carried on and won something else.’ So said Roberto Mancini on Tg1 after being presented as the new head coach of the national team, reflecting on his departure from the Azzurri in 2023. “I think he’s very happy right now too,” he added, referring to his friend and former team-mate who passed away on 5 January 2023. “It will be a perfect partnership with Claudio Ranieri. We’ll get on well because our aim is to win,” continued Mancini, who emphasised: “His national team will have to play well, attacking as we did a few years ago. I believe we have the players; we need to regain our composure because it hasn’t been easy.”
