(LaPresse) – “Baresi, immortal legend, inimitable standard-bearer who will never stop flying – farewell, captain.” The banner appeared on a balcony of the building opposite the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, where over a thousand fans from the Curva Sud had gathered to await the funeral of Milan’s legendary captain. A large flag in the club’s colours bearing the inscription ‘Baresi 6’ was hoisted in the square. Many wore the Rossoneri shirt bearing the number 6, which was retired by the club following Baresi’s retirement from football and has never since been assigned to another player. A wreath from FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, was laid on the church steps. Among the first players to arrive were Filippo Galli and Riccardo Montolivo. Banners from the ultra groups were also on display. The funeral of the former Rossoneri and Italy international defender, who died on Friday 31 July aged 66 following a long illness, is scheduled for 11.00. Thousands of fans, former players and representatives of the authorities are expected to attend.
