Rome, 5 Aug. (LaPresse) – Gianfranco Zola is returning to the Azzurri and joining Club Italia as coordinator of youth development projects. The president of the FIGC, Giovanni Malagò, and the president of Club Italia, Claudio Ranieri, were keen to bring him on board to complete the leadership team of the federal body that oversees the management and development of all the national teams, having agreed on the appointment with the president of Lega Pro, Matteo Marani, for whom Zola will continue to serve as deputy vice-president. The architect of the ‘reform’ that bears his name – a policy platform that has encouraged the use of young players in Serie C – Zola (who made 35 appearances and scored 10 goals for Italy as a player) will once again don the national team’s shirt – or rather, the national teams’ shirts – given that his remit will be broader and will focus on building the youth team system, alongside technical coordinator Maurizio Viscidi.
