Ginevra is the strongest in Europe at the moment: even if you’re the pre-race favourite, it’s not easy to live up to expectations. Marcello is always right there with us among the frontrunners.” So said Gregorio Paltrinieri, taking stock of the Italian open-water team after winning silver in the mixed relay at the European Swimming Championships in Paris. “It’s been a very intense championship for everyone: Ginevra has done brilliantly; she’s our key female swimmer and has won loads of races. We’ve all done quite well. I’m leaving with a bit of regret, not entirely happy with how I handled certain situations,” admitted the swimmer from Carpi. “But that’s part of competing, and I gave it everything I had. I can’t fault myself for anything. I’m in good shape; now I’ll try to improve between now and Los Angeles.” “We were all very good,” emphasised Barbara Pozzobon. “Each of us gave 100 per cent and we managed to secure this silver.” “I’m happy with how things went and I’m sure I’ll definitely do better next year,” added Marcello Guidi. Ginevra Taddeucci, the star of this year’s event with her double victory in the 5km and 10km races, concluded: “We’re a very close-knit, incredibly strong team,” she highlighted. “We’re world runners-up, European runners-up and Italian champions because we’re all part of the Fiamme Oro sports group, whom we salute and thank.”
