(LaPresse) – Benedetta Pilato and Lisa Angiolini put in convincing performances in the 100m breaststroke heats at the European Swimming Championships, finishing third and fourth respectively – times that secure their places in the semi-finals. The 21-year-old from Taranto, a European gold medallist at Rome 2022 – who competes for CC Aniene and has been coached by Mirko Nozzolillo in Rome since September – swam a time of 1:06.20, passing the 50-metre mark strongly in 30.65 before controlling the final 50 metres (35.55); It was a steady race, however, for the 31-year-old from Siena – registered with Carabinieri and Virtus Buonconvento – who touched in 1’06”31 (31”07–35”24). Anita Bottazzo (Fiamme Gialle/Imolanuoto) was left disappointed in sixteenth place, though third among the Italian swimmers, in 1’07”73. Further back was Chiara Della Corte (Fiamme Oro/Campania Sport) in 1’09‘44. Britain’s Angharad Evans led the field and swam a fast race, setting a new meet record of 1’05’45, which surpassed the previous mark of 1’05″53 set by Russia’s Yulyia Efimova in Glasgow in 2018.
