Turin, 12 Aug. (LaPresse) – Marcell Jacobs’ hopes of a medal in the 100-metre final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham have been dashed. The Italian slowed down significantly after 50 metres due to a physical problem, finishing in seventh place. Gold went to Britain’s Romell Glave in 10.09 seconds, ahead of his compatriot Jeremiah Azu (10.16), with bronze going to Germany’s Owen Ansah (10.19). Chituru Ali, the other Italian in the final, finished sixth in 10.34 seconds. “I’m really sorry; I felt really good after the semi-final. I tried out the starting blocks during the warm-up and felt a massive twinge in my adductor – the same one I’d felt before Monte Carlo. I got into the blocks; I was ready to give it my all just to make it to the finish. We knew we could win; given how I ran in the semi-final, I felt good. But it’s all part of the game; I’m not the sort to give up when something worrying happens. We’ll carry on down this path,” the Italian sprinter told Rai Sport.
