Rome, 14 Aug. (LaPresse) – At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Dariya Derkach has won gold in the triple jump. The Italian athlete led from the very first jump thanks to a distance of 14.53 metres on her first attempt. She then recorded a solid 14.48 metres with a steady tailwind (+1.3) on her second attempt, before improving to 14.60 metres – a personal best and the best European performance of the season – on her fourth attempt. Silver went to Belgium’s Saliyya Guisse (14.46) and Bulgaria’s Aleksandra Nacheva (14.40). It was a disappointment for the other Italian competitor in the event, the young Erika Saraceni, who failed to make the top eight and thus did not qualify for the final three jumps. In her second attempt – a long but invalid jump – Saraceni was hampered by a tailwind that affected her run-up. This is Italy’s third gold medal at this European Championships (sixth podium finish) following victories by Leonardo Fabbri in the shot put and Nadia Battocletti in the 5,000 metres.
