Rome, Aug. 16 (LaPresse) – At the European Athletics Championships, Pietro Riva won the silver medal in the marathon. The Italian finished in 2:09:18, 7″ behind the winner, German Anamal Petrus. Bronze went to Israel’s Gashau Ayale (2:09:21). Riva produced a great finish and managed himself brilliantly, overcoming the resistance of the Israeli and Swedish runner Suidan Hassan in the final kilometers. In the team event, Israel triumphed ahead of Germany and France. Italy finished fifth. Ahmed Ouhda was 18th (2:11.45) and Daniele Meucci 23rd (2:14.33).
