Three crucial points for Di Francesco’s side, getting the league campaign off to the best possible start. The first half ended goalless, with Venezia aggrieved at a goal by Correia being correctly disallowed following a VAR review for an accidental handball by the Portuguese winger. Lecce struggled against the hosts’ quality and found it hard to create chances, but came close to taking the lead through Coulibaly just before half-time. The visitors took the lead early in the second half, with a distracted Venezia defence allowing Coulibaly to lay the ball back for Gorter, who, from the edge of the box, beat Stankovic thanks to a deflection. Venezia tried to respond and came close to equalising through Franjic. In the closing stages, however, after another Venezia goal by Haps was ruled out, Lecce doubled their lead with a clinical finish from Tiago Gabriel.
