Milan, 24 Aug. (LaPresse) – Flavio Cobolli has reached sixth place in the ATP rankings this week. He is the sixth Italian player in the history of tennis to climb so high in the men’s world rankings. Before 1973, only Nicola Pietrangeli, who was ranked number 3 in 1959 and 1960, had been among the world’s top six players. He would have remained the highest-ranked Italian in men’s tennis before Jannik Sinner, the first Italian to reach world number one. In the era of computerised rankings, the list of the top six Italians also includes Adriano Panatta (number 4 in August 1976), Lorenzo Musetti (number 5 in January 2026) and Matteo Berrettini (number 6 in January 2022). This milestone comes after his first Masters 1000 semi-final, reached in Cincinnati. It sets him on a path with renewed ambitions towards the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season which world number one Jannik Sinner will not be competing in. In any case, the South Tyrolean is certain to remain at the top of the rankings at least until early October, until the Shanghai Masters 1000. Behind him is Alexander Zverev once again, ranked number 2 because Carlos Alcaraz has lost the 1,000 points he earned last year by winning the title in Cincinnati. The Spaniard will return to action at the US Open, but as the defending champion, he can at best retain all his current 7,160 points, without earning any more.
