Milan, 26 August (LaPresse) – Flavio Cobolli and Belinda Bencic knocked out Carlos Alcaraz and Serena Williams in the mixed doubles quarter-finals at the US Open. The Italian and the Swiss, the No. 4 seeds, defeated the American champion and the Spanish star 5-4, 4-1, thereby securing their place in the semi-finals. For the 23-year-old from El Palmar, it was a comeback in style after a four-month break due to a serious injury to his right wrist. Alcaraz played in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium and alongside Serena Williams, who, at the age of 44, has decided to pick up a racket again. It was also a good test for Cobolli, who is warming up ahead of the start of the men’s singles tournament. The next match for him and his doubles partner Bencic will be on Thursday 27 August, again at Arthur Ashe Stadium, against France’s Gaël Monfils and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
