Milan, 31 Aug. (LaPresse) – Venus Williams’s opening match at the US Open, the 26th of her career, was postponed until after midnight. The 46-year-old then lost in two sets in what could be her final singles match at a Grand Slam, if not the very last of her illustrious career. Williams was defeated 6-2, 7-6 (6) by her compatriot Sofia Kenin, who entered the tournament on a wild card, in the early hours of Monday morning at Arthur Ashe Stadium. At 00.13, it marked the latest start time in the history of the US Open. It was also the latest finish of any first-round match, in both the men’s and women’s draws.
