Charles Leclerc set the fastest time of 1’23″008, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who was +0.173 behind. Third place went to George Russell’s Mercedes, +0.304 behind, followed by Liam Lawson in a Red Bull, +0.425 behind. Kimi Antonelli took fifth place in the other Mercedes, +0.636 behind; the Italian driver showed excellent race pace despite starting from the back of the grid due to a power unit change. Behind Antonelli was Lando Norris in his McLaren, +0.711 behind Leclerc. Max Verstappen did not take to the track; instead, the Japanese driver Ayumu Iwasa, in his Red Bull, finished in 17th place. The second free practice session takes place this afternoon.
