(LaPresse) – Pro Ref, the body responsible for refereeing in the Premier League, has admitted that Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Sunday’s Manchester derby should not have been allowed, as VAR determined that Enzo Fernández was not interfering with the play in the build-up to the goal. This is reported by The Guardian. Haaland’s goal at Old Trafford, in the 60th minute, had initially been ruled out for offside, only to be awarded following a VAR review. The issue centred on Enzo Fernández’s position following Patrick Dorgu’s deflection of Josko Gvardiol’s cross. According to the VAR review, Fernández did not interfere with the play, despite the Argentine midfielder being marked by his compatriot Lisandro Martínez. A statement from Pro Ref read: “Following the incident in the 60th minute of Sunday’s Premier League match between Manchester United and Manchester City at Old Trafford, we can provide clarification regarding the goal awarded to Erling Haaland. The on-pitch decision was that Haaland was offside, but VAR confirmed that the player was in an onside position. In the same move, it was established that Fernández did not touch the ball and therefore any offside infringement is subjective; however, on this occasion, VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended a review on the pitch. We have contacted Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we consider to be an error of judgement. An investigation into the incident will be launched.”
