(LaPresse) – President Giovanni Malagò and the FIGC join the family of Sandro Mazzola in mourning the loss of one of Italian football’s most beloved champions, who passed away overnight at the age of 83. In his memory, a minute’s silence will be observed during all matches scheduled for the weekend across all competitions. Flags will fly at half-mast at the FIGC headquarters in Rome and at the Federal Technical Centre in Coverciano. The son of Torino legend Valentino Mazzola, who died in the Superga tragedy, Sandro Mazzola was himself an Inter legend, wearing the Nerazzurri shirt from 1961 to 1977 and winning four Scudetti, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. An extraordinary career that also saw him triumph for the national team (70 caps and 22 goals), with whom he was crowned European Champion in 1968, taking part in three World Cups and reaching the final at Mexico ’70 – a World Cup also remembered for his famous ‘one-two’ with Gianni Rivera. In 2014, he was inducted into the ‘Italian Football Hall of Fame’.
