This is a milestone of symbolic yet significant importance for the Italian, who is the tenth player to have spent the most weeks at the top of the rankings since the computerised ATP rankings were introduced in 1973. The South Tyrolean is mathematically guaranteed to remain world number one for at least another three weeks, until the Shanghai Masters 1000, which concludes on 18 October. However, to overtake him by then, Zverev will need to win the Beijing ATP 500 and the Asian Masters 1000, whilst Sinner – currently entered in both tournaments – must score fewer than 90 points. Italy retains two players in the Top 10. Behind Sinner, Flavio Cobolli remains at number 7; he is expected to be a key player for Team Europe this weekend at the Laver Cup, a team exhibition between Europe and the Rest of the World, broadcast live and free-to-air on SuperTennis.
