Milan, 2 Oct. (LaPresse) – Manchester City has lodged a “comprehensive” appeal, as confirmed by the club on Friday, following the publication of a report by an independent commission detailing serious breaches of financial regulations by the Premier League club, in one of the biggest scandals in English football. “The club’s firm position,” reads a brief statement from City, “is that, for a number of reasons, the report contains clear errors of fact, law, principle and substance, and is therefore unfounded.” City has consistently maintained its innocence throughout this protracted saga, which began in 2018 and culminated on Tuesday with the Premier League’s publication of a verdict finding the Abu Dhabi-owned club “guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches” of the competition’s financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. City has not yet received any sanctions. According to the Premier League, possible sanctions could include a reprimand, a fine, a points deduction or, in the worst-case scenario, exclusion from the competition. No team has ever been excluded from the top tier of English football. City’s directors stated that they would lodge an appeal, which they did on Thursday evening, before Friday’s deadline, the club said. “The club is innocent of the allegations made by the Premier League and there is a body of irrefutable evidence supporting all its positions regarding this case,” City said, reiterating the same statements it had previously made.
