Rome, 14 October (LaPresse) – Gaël Monfils has called it a day. The 40-year-old French tennis player has officially retired from competition. He had initially planned to end his career at the Rolex Paris Masters, scheduled to take place from 2 to 8 November. By adding his name to the list of retired players, he has effectively brought his career to a close following his second-round defeat to Learner Tien at the 2026 US Open. Monfils reached sixth place in the ATP world rankings, the highest position of his career, in November 2016. He won 13 ATP Tour singles titles out of 35 finals contested. He reached at least one final every year for 19 consecutive seasons, from 2005 to 2023. At Grand Slam tournaments, his best results were two semi-final appearances: at Roland-Garros in 2008 and at the US Open in 2016. His most recent victory remains the one he secured against Paraguay’s Daniel Vallejo in the first round of the 2026 US Open, on the very day of his 40th birthday. In the Davis Cup, he helped France reach the final twice. On both occasions, however, Les Bleus were defeated: in 2010 by Novak Djokovic’s Serbia and in 2014 by Roger Federer’s Switzerland. On 16 July 2021, in Nyon, he married Elina Svitolina, the first Ukrainian tennis player to break into the WTA singles Top 10. Their first daughter, Skai, was born on 15 October 2022. The ITIA has clarified the consequences of his inclusion on the retired players list: “This exempts the player from anti-doping testing and, technically, they would have to undergo six months of out-of-competition testing before being allowed to compete again. Serena Williams did the same.”
