The 30-year-old from Bagni di Lucca, ranked 33rd in the world and seeded 15th, having beaten the Czech left-hander Sara Bejlek (WTA No. 20) in her opening match and gone on to defeat another Czech, Nikola Bartunkova (No. 29), was soundly defeated 6-2, 6-0, in just over an hour, by the British player Sonay Kartal, ranked 170th in the WTA.
