Milan, 4 Nov. (LaPresse) – Yet another case of tennis players, both male and female, being subjected to abuse on social media by punters. The latest victim is British tennis player Jodie Burrage, who received death threats and a barrage of abuse on social media following her defeat in her first main-draw match at a WTA tournament in 16 months. Burrage posted a video showing a long string of offensive messages she received on Instagram after losing 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Vaishnavi Adkar in the round of 32 at the Chennai Open on Tuesday. Accompanying the video, Burrage wrote: “A lovely welcome back to the circuit. Now I remember why I left.” Many of the insults apparently came from punters who were upset by the player’s defeat.
