Turkey, EU: ‘Respect democratic values’

Brussels, 24 Mar. (LaPresse) – ’What we can say is that the arrest of the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu and the demonstrators raises questions about Turkey's adherence to its long-established democratic tradition as a member of the Council of Europe and candidate to the EU must uphold democratic values. These rights, the rights of elected officials, as well as the right to peaceful demonstrations, must be fully respected.’ This was stated by the European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier during the usual press briefing.
