Nepal: government lifts social media ban after protests

Kathmandu (Nepal), Sep 9 (LaPresse/AP) – Nepal has lifted the ban on social media platforms after 19 people died during protests against the government led by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli. Several social networks, including Facebook, X, and YouTube, were blocked in the country last week. Authorities stated that the companies had not registered or submitted to government oversight. Monday’s demonstrations against the ban brought tens of thousands of people into the streets of Kathmandu. A crowd surrounded the Parliament building before police opened fire on the protesters. Interior Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned during an emergency Cabinet meeting on Monday evening.
