Middle East, Jordan partially reopens Allenby crossing: no thanks

Rome, Sept. 21 (LaPresse) – Jordan has announced the partial reopening of the border crossing with the West Bank, three days after it was closed following an attack in which two Israeli soldiers were killed. “The crossing was reopened on Sunday only for travelers, while the movement of freight trucks remains suspended until further notice,” an official statement reads. The state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka also reported heavy traffic at the Allenby crossing in both directions from the early morning hours.

On Thursday, according to the Times of Israel, a Jordanian truck driver transporting aid to Gaza opened fire at the crossing, killing an Israeli soldier and a reserve officer of the civil administration, before being killed himself. After the attack, the Israeli army requested that Jordan and the Jerusalem leadership suspend the transfer of aid through the terminal. Allenby is mainly used by West Bank Palestinians to travel abroad without passing through Israel.
