Ukraine, von der Leyen: ‘Decisive action now can lead to a turning point in the conflict’

Brussels, 30 September (LaPresse) – ‘I firmly believe that we are at a point where decisive action on our part can lead to a turning point in this conflict.’ This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ahead of the College of Commissioners’ meeting on security. ‘Peace has always been a fundamental task of the European Union,’ she recalled. “Certainly, over the years, the tools have changed, but the goal remains the same. It has been less than three years and seven months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine continues to resist on the battlefield, yielding virtually no territory this year. It is impressive. You know that in the last 1,000 days, Russia has conquered only 1% of Ukraine’s occupied territory, despite the loss of more than 250,000 Russian lives on the battlefield,” von der Leyen points out.
