Ukraine, Kiev: ‘Nuclear disaster risk in Zaporizhzhia’

Turin, 7 October (LaPresse) – Ukraine ‘strongly condemns Russia’s dangerous new escalation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and considers the bombings part of a deliberate strategy to block repair work’. This was stated by the Kiev Foreign Ministry in a note reported by Ukrinform. The numerous attacks in the immediate vicinity of the plant, recorded by the International Atomic Energy Agency on 6 October, represent a deliberate provocation by Russia, which once again shows total disregard for international law, the IAEA Statute and the seven fundamental pillars of nuclear safety,” the ministry emphasised. ‘The deliberate creation of risks around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant threatens to cause a nuclear catastrophe on a continental scale,“ it added. The plant has been without power for almost two weeks. ‘We consider the bombings to be part of a deliberate strategy by Russia to block the repair work and restoration of the power lines necessary to ensure a reliable external energy supply,” the statement continued.
