Washington (USA), October 8 (LaPresse) – Former FBI director James Comey pleaded not guilty during the preliminary hearing at the federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, in the case initiated against him by the Department of Justice. Comey’s lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client and requested a jury trial. The case against Comey, who in 2016 ordered the investigation into alleged links between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, is the most significant legal action taken against those the U.S. president considers his political enemies. The indictment of the former FBI director came shortly after Trump effectively ordered, via a social media post, his Attorney General Pam Bondi to take legal action against Comey, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff from California, and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Comey faces charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice related to his testimony before a Senate committee in September 2020. He risks up to five years in prison if convicted.
