Lima (Peru), 10 October (LaPresse) – Peru’s Congress voted early on Friday to remove President Dina Boluarte from office. Lawmakers approved four motions to impeach Boluarte, accusing her government of failing to curb crime. The president was asked to appear shortly before midnight to present her defence, but when she failed to show up, parliamentarians immediately proceeded to vote on her removal. 124 members of the unicameral Congress (composed of 130 seats) voted in favour. There were no votes against. The turning point came a few hours after a shooting during a concert in the capital Lima, which further fuelled anger over the escalating violence plaguing the country. Unlike the eight previous impeachment attempts, this time almost all parliamentary factions expressed support for the motions.
