USA, sanctions imposed on Colombian President Petro

Milan, Oct. 24 (LaPresse) – The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against Colombian President Gustavo Petro, as well as his wife Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia, his son Nicolas Petro, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, a close collaborator. The U.S. accuses Petro of drug trafficking. “Since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has skyrocketed, reaching the highest rate in decades, flooding the United States and poisoning Americans,” said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “President Petro has allowed drug cartels to prosper and has refused to stop this activity. Today, President Trump is taking strong action to protect our nation and make clear that we will not tolerate drug trafficking in our country,” he added.
