France, Macron: ‘Voluntary military service from summer 2026’

Paris (France), 29 Nov. (LaPresse) – French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a new military service programme for 18- and 19-year-old volunteers. Starting next year, they will serve for 10 months. Macron presented the plan on Thursday at the Varces military base in the French Alps. The programme aims to strengthen France’s defences in the face of growing threats, particularly from Russia. Volunteers will serve in France and its overseas territories, not in military operations abroad. Compulsory conscription, which ended in 1996, will not be reinstated.
