Washington (USA), Nov. 28 (LaPresse) – The asylum application of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the 29-year-old Afghan who on Wednesday assaulted two National Guard members in Washington, had been approved this year by the Trump Administration. Lakanwal had arrived in the United States as part of the evacuation operations after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Kabul, and had been one of more than 190,000 Afghan refugees admitted. Despite having cooperated with the CIA in Afghanistan since 2011, he had undergone security checks both in Afghanistan and during the immigration process. However, sources confirmed that no thorough background checks had been carried out due to the chaos of the withdrawal. Lakanwal lived with his family in Bellingham, Washington, and had worked briefly as a contractor for Amazon. On Wednesday, he assaulted two National Guard members in Washington, killing Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. Prosecutor Jeanine Pirro accused the Biden Administration of failing to carry out proper vetting and criticized Lakanwal’s admission process, arguing that after the withdrawal, it had not been possible to conduct accurate checks on refugees. President Trump defended the difficulty of expelling refugees once they arrive in the United States, despite criticism of the asylum handling.
