EU: agreement on gradual ban on imports of Russian gas

Rome, Dec. 3 (LaPresse) – The EU Council and representatives of the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement on a regulation for the gradual phasing out of imports of Russian natural gas. This is stated in a note. The regulation, it is explained, introduces a gradual and legally binding ban on imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas from Russia, with a total ban taking effect from the end of 2026 and autumn 2027 respectively. “This is a great victory for us and for all of Europe. We must put an end to the EU’s dependence on Russian gas, and permanently banning it in the EU is an important step in the right direction. I am very pleased and proud that we have managed to reach an agreement with the European Parliament so quickly. This shows our commitment to strengthening our security and safeguarding our energy supply,” said Lars Aagaard, Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities.
