Washington (USA), Dec. 5 (LaPresse) – A wintry atmosphere in Washington for the draw of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Long lines formed in the snow from as early as 7 a.m. outside the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the venue for the event. For the draw of the tournament bracket – expanded for this edition to 48 nations and hosted from June 11 to July 19 by the United States, Mexico and Canada – U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are expected to attend. Trump, frustrated at not having received the Nobel Peace Prize, will console himself with the FIFA Peace Prize, which will be presented to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The ceremony, hosted by former England captain Rio Ferdinand, will also be attended by former stars Tom Brady of the NFL, Shaquille O’Neal of the NBA and Wayne Gretzky of the NHL, along with New York Yankees baseball champion Aaron Judge. The tournament will open on June 11 in Mexico City. The United States, which reached the semifinals in the first World Cup in 1930 and made it to the quarter-finals only once more in 2002, will begin the following day in Inglewood, California. Canada will kick off the tournament in Toronto. All matches from the quarter-finals onward will be played in the United States, which will use 11 NFL stadiums. The venues for most of the matches and kick-off times will be announced on Saturday.
