Oslo (Norway), 10 December (LaPresse/AP) – The daughter of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of her mother, a few hours after officials announced that Machado would not be attending the ceremony. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said during the award ceremony that ‘María Corina Machado did everything she could to be able to attend today’s ceremony, undertaking a journey in a situation of extreme danger.’ ‘Although she will not be able to attend today’s ceremony and events, we are deeply happy to confirm that she is safe and will be with us here in Oslo,’ he explained to applause.
