Ukraine, Kallas: “Russia cannot endure or spend more than we can”

Milan, Dec. 12 (LaPresse) – On support for Ukraine, “we are moving forward with our plans. It is a clear message: first, to Russia, which cannot endure longer than us nor spend more than us; second, to Ukraine, to which we will provide the support it needs; third, to the United States, to whom we say that we are deciding on matters that concern us. President Costa said that we will not leave the European Council without a clear decision,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

“We certainly welcome the momentum towards peace that the U.S. administration is also showing,” she added, “unfortunately, we do not see a genuine will for peace from Russia: it is constantly bombing Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure. First, we need to see a ceasefire. For a sustainable peace, we must ensure that Russia does not attack again. We need concessions from Russia, whether it is to limit their army or contain their military budget.”

Regarding Ukraine’s possible EU accession in 2027, Kallas clarified: “EU membership is a merit-based process and it is up to the member states to decide. This proposal is a good signal for the country blocking Ukraine’s progress, a country very friendly with the United States (Hungary, ed.): the fact that the U.S. is pushing could convince them to lift the veto. But it must remain a merit-based process.”
