Brussels, Dec. 16 (LaPresse) – The European Commission is backtracking on the phase-out of internal combustion engines. From 2035 onwards, car manufacturers will have to meet a 90% emissions reduction target, while the remaining 10% of emissions will have to be offset through the use of low-carbon steel produced in the Union, or through e-fuels and biofuels. This will allow plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), range-extender vehicles, mild hybrids and vehicles with internal combustion engines to continue to play a role even after 2035, alongside fully electric (EV) and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The Commission is also proposing a targeted amendment to CO2 emission rules for heavy-duty vehicles, introducing flexibility to help meet the 2030 targets. This is set out in the automotive package presented by the European executive.
