Ukraine, Berlin: the SPD does not rule out possible deployment of German troops

Berlin (Germany), Dec 16 (LaPresse) – In Germany, the SPD parliamentary group does not rule out sending German soldiers to ensure a ceasefire in Ukraine. “But the deployment of troops depends greatly on the context, the context, and the specific tasks,” said parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch in the Bundestag. The statement, made during talks on Ukraine in Berlin, is very broad. The coming weeks will have to show the results that will follow. “Friedrich Merz has our full support for the initiative he has currently presented, and so we are not ruling out anything at the moment,” Miersch said. In the talks on Ukraine, it was agreed that a European-led force, supported by the United States, should support the Ukrainian armed forces and ensure the security of airspace and maritime areas. This should also be done “through operations within Ukraine.” It is now up to Russia to respond, Miersch said, according to whom “at least the window is open. Some say: wider than ever.” The SPD, of course, “will support Chancellor Friedrich Merz (in this process to the best of its ability),” the Social Democrat added.
