UN, Guterres calls on Israel to lift NGO ban in Gaza

Rome, Jan. 3 (LaPresse) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling on Israel to end the ban imposed on 37 humanitarian agencies operating in Gaza, saying he is “deeply concerned” by the developments. “The Secretary-General,” said spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, “is deeply concerned about the announcement by the Israeli authorities to suspend the operations of several international non-governmental organizations in the occupied Palestinian territories. He calls for this measure to be revoked, stressing that international NGOs are essential for life-saving humanitarian work and that the suspension threatens to undermine the fragile progress made during the ceasefire.”

“This announcement,” the statement continues, “comes in addition to previous restrictions that have already delayed the entry of food, medicine, hygiene supplies, and essential shelters into Gaza. This recent decision will further worsen the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians.” The Secretary-General emphasizes that “in accordance with its obligations under international humanitarian law, Israel must allow and facilitate the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid to all civilians in need.”
